FTP - the File Transfer Protocol.
STP - Shilded Twisted Pair.

Short for Shielded Twisted-Pair cable, STP is a type of cable originally developed by IBM for Token Ring that consists of two individual wires wrapped in a foil shielding to help provide a more reliable data communication. You may need it if you have the environment with high EMI (ElectroMagnetic Interference), for example, if you have a huge transformer or work at the Power Generation Station.

FTP is the PROTOCOL to transfer data over any media, it's WHAT you transfer. It does not really matter what media do you use (sure, speed depends on the technology you use). But there is no "special" benefits of using STP except I mentioned above (EMI environment).

Good luck,

Mike

Are you sure you didn't mean ftp vs sftp?

The advantage of sftp is SFTP, or secure FTP, is a program that uses SSH to transfer files.

Unlike standard FTP, it encrypts both commands and data, preventing passwords and sensitive information from being transmitted in the clear over the network.

It is functionally similar to FTP, but because it uses a different protocol, you can't use a standard FTP client to talk to an SFTP server, nor can you connect to an FTP server with a client that supports only SFTP.

The disadvantage of sftp is the additional overhead caused by the encryption. Typically, one would use compression with sftp (and probalby ftp too).

um, guys.

FTP - FOILED twisted pair
STP - SHIELDED twisted pair

both serve the same purpose - to eliminate interference. I don't have any real experience in this area but would think FTP is just a watered down STP, which would be best suited for areas with moderate interference with a lower cost than STP.
