DBAN will erase system

by gralfus In reply to Gdisk on a bootable cd

DBAN is a simple bootable CD that will completely erase a hard drive. The ISO of the CD is available at

There is nothing to install on the hard drive, just boot with the CD and tell it to wipe using a single pass. You will then need to partition (fdisk) and format the drive to use it again (XP will do this for you).

Vista permanently resides in the Host Protected Area

by technimac In reply to DBAN will erase system

I installed Vista Business and was soon regretting it. Crappy GUI, little user control and seemingly designed for M$, not the user. So I decided to wipe my HD, and reinstall WinXP Pro. Tried Dban beta and others, but Vista has stashed code in the HPA that can't be touched.
Now it's impossible to install XP Pro, because of Vista's residue in the HPA.
Anyone know of a free diskwipe prog that'll wipe the HPA as well?
I know that Gdisk32.exe should be able to do it, but I haven't been able to make that happen.

I have went and downloaded DBAN from but have been unsuccessful in burning a "bootable disk". I have followed their instructions and have burn 4 disks that do nothing. My compter that I`m trying to make the bootable disk with, has Vista for the OS. Does anybody think that is the problem or does anyone have suggestions on how I can make this bootable disk? Please help!
