Get Notification if POP3 Virtual Server stops

By jordan ·
I would like to get a notification by email if the POP3 Virtual Server service has been stopped on Windows Server 2003 w/ Exchange.

How can this be accomplished?
Thanks.

Can you elaborate?

by jordan In reply to If you use SMTP

I feel you should be able to get notice if a service is stopped. Service is a Service. If you can get notice for SMTP being stopped you should be able to do the same with POP3.
We use IMAP and Exchange but for some users POP3 is required. Any help would be great.
Thanks

you want an email notice

by CG IT In reply to Can you elaborate?

and to get an email notice, well, the email service has to be operating.

POP3 service is an upload and download of mail from a mail service provider. If that virtual server service stops, it doesn't effect the SMTP virtual server service.

To that end, you can have POP3 simply as a service that gets mail, while your SMTP service sends mail directly.

So that's how you can get an email if the POP3 service goes down.

Let me Clarify

by jordan In reply to you want an email notice

I would like to get a notification sent through the SMTP if the POP3 service stops. I don't care about email continuing to function outbound as if part of the system is down I need to know. Is there any way I can send a notification to my exchange mailbox if the POP3 service is stopped.

So what I want to do is monitor the service on a continual basis if the service stops for whatever reason or even on reboot does not start up I need to know. I do not use POP3 nor does most of the organization but one user does and it is imperative to know if it goes down.

Thanks for the help.

In ESM, go to your server Properties (ESM/Administrative Groups/First Administrative Group/Servers/your server name/Properties), Monitoring tab, and then ADD a monitor for the POP3 Service / OK / OK

Next go to ESM/Tools/Monitoring and Status/ Notifications and add a new email notification for the critical state.

Quess I have to stop thinking that if they work with Exchange they know

by CG IT In reply to re: Get Notification if P ...

That's where some of the questions posted tend to get my radar up. If one has experience with Exchange, then they must know the monitoring of exchange because that's whats taught either in formal education or the boot camps and self paced training sessions. Further, that if one works with exchange, they know where to find the answer either by the Exchange books at their desk or on Microsofts Technet site or MsExchange.org. Not techrepublic.

we KNOW the BS of password hacks

by CG IT In reply to yeah I'd rather see more ...

it's when the BS starts with some more interesting questions. Come on Churdoo, do you know anyone who works with Exchange that doesn't know about setting up alerts to monitor it? I don't know anyone who works with Exchange that doesn't . I know some who say they can and dont' know but then they don't know Exchange and work with Exchange.
