Get program error when not on network

By swomack ·
This is very strange and I doubt there is an answer. Our CFO's wife has a Gateway laptop with W2K Pro and Office 2K. They have a home network which uses a Linksys Router and DSL modem. The router assigns the ip addresses. Everything works fine when she is physically plugged into their network but if she tries to use Word or Excel (maybe other programs but that all she uses) when the laptop is not hooked to the network, she gets a Program Error and the program closes down. I saw it for myself. We had her laptop on their network and used Word just fine. I simply unplugged the network cable from her NIC and opened Word and after 30 seconds the Program Error occured and Word shut down. If you unplug the network cable while Word is open, it doesn't get the error. Only if you open Word after the network cable has been unplugged. Anyone have a clue? I have the drwtsn32.log file from her comupter in case that would contain any useful info but to me it is a foreign language.

How was Word/Excel installed? If through a network, then this hanging is understandable if she's trying to run something not on the standard install or if during the install, the CD light comes on and the program is looking for some add-in feature.

I would remove the programs, reboot, and then reinstall but make sure you do a "custom" install... and do not run any part of Office "from CD" -- in other words, install the whole of these programs to her local hdd (space permitting of course).

I would suspect either the network install by the fact that the install is looking for some part of the program to be running from either the network connection (since it runs fine when connected to her network), or that the software itself corrupted somehow.

I still would recommend uninstalling, rebooting and reinstalling the office suite from a "custom" install.

Because this is your bosses wife, you cannot very well question what was the last thing she did successfully in Word or Excel. It may be that that question sheds no light either... especially if the program files have gotten corrupted.

It is a general fix to find the normal.dot file (MS Word) and delete it. But I do not remember what the corresponding file in MS Excel is. That may fix the problem if the program is trying to load a specific template when starting. But the fact that all works (and seems to be normal) when she's connected to thier LAN, seems strange.

The install was not done thru a network only on that machine but perhaps it was connected to the network during the install.

If the word/excel was deployed through software GPO instalation and assigned to the domain user using the laptop, the behaviour of the program is understandable if the laptop is not hooked to the network as the local user of the machine has insufficient rights over the program. Make the domain user, the local administrator of the machine. Or add the local user of the machine as member of member of the local administrator.

The error message details would be helpful.
If you are getting an Illeagle operation message, click the detaiols button and post the first two lines. eg. "(SOME PROGRAM) caused an invalid page fault in module (MODULE NAME.EXE)" THe stack dump info is irrelevant at this time.
The previous post made sense but usually if the program is installed to read from CD then the message to insert the CD will appear. As for a network installation, it wil look to the network drive and tell you the resource is unavailable. This shouldn't cayse an Illeagle Operation error.
BUT YOU NEVER KNOW!!

I am going to take the paranoid approach and suggest you run a full updated anti-virus scan on this laptop now!
Obviously, when Word is opened, some component is trying to access the Internet in some way. Now, Office 2K does not have the phone homethat Office XP's activation does, so that is not it.
It is my fear that there might be some viral code in NORMAL.DOT that is trying to run a phone home routine? Or maybe a macro virus in NORMAL.DOT that is trying to e-mail someone something. Eitherway, no network connection so no outbound communications. And since whatever it is that is doing this can't communicate, it is crashing.
So, I would be afraid it is a virus.
Check it out.
Good luck.
