Got a suggestion for stopping password cracking attacks on the ftp server?

By rkirkaas ·
We have a Windows ftp server exposed to the Internet, available to people who have login credentials. We find that the ftp log fills up from time to time with failed login attempts caused presumably by software trying out a list of common name/password combos. They never succeed because we use hard-to-guess credentials. But I'd love to know how to block those attacks by, say, locking out an IP address after some number of unsuccessful login attempts. I never figured out how to do that with the iis ftp server. Anyone know how to do this?
