    Groupwise 5.5 still causing Fatal Except

    We are working with Groupwise 5.5 for our email. A handfull of our users are getting a Fatal Exception error whenever they reply to an email. I’ve reinstalled Groupwise, installed all the current patches, plus some other trials and errors. Nothing has seemed to work. Any suggestions???

      Problems with Groupwise can be attributed to many things such as 1) the workstation hardware, 2) the Groupwise client software, 3) the Novell Client32 software, 4) Groupwise server software and patches, 5) corrupt/damaged user message databases, 6) problems with the Groupwise server, 6) problems with the other person’s e-mail system, etc.

      If your users are receiving a Windows Fatal Exception Error (the awful blue screen) and if it is the same handful of users every time, it could be a problem with the drivers installed on their local machine or the Groupwise client or Novell Client32 on their local machine. To determine whether it is actually a server vs. client problem, I suggest that you look at the logs for the POA and the GWIA agents on the server during the time these errors occur. If the logs do not show any error message for that time period, then the problem is probably specific to the workstation.

      To fix client/user specific problems:
      First, make sure that you have allthe current patches

      Make sure that the Novell client has been updated with the current patches. Also make sure that the Groupwise client got the updates when you patched the server by checking Force Auto-Update in the Software Distribution Directory Management of the Groupwise System Operations. When the user logs on, it should prompt them to update. – OR- You could re-install the Groupwise client on their workstations manually.

      Look at support.novell.com on how to do a top-down rebuild. Also, try doing an Analyze/Fix Databases on 1) the post offices with Structure, Index Check and Fix selected for user and message dbs, 2) the users’ aving the problems with Structure, Index Check and Fix selected for user and message dbs 3) then the users again with Contents and Fix selected for user and message dbs. You’ll probably want to do the top-down rebuild last because the agents have to be shut down.

      Are you running the client from the server or locally? A local install will resolve a lot of application errors (Select Standard installation versus Workstation installation in the Groupwise Client Setup)

      Almost every time we get an exception popping up like that with GroupWise 5.5, it’s because of 3rd party mapi32.dll files. Look in the Windows\system directory, your mapi32.dll file should be about 700k. If it’s not, find the backup copy and rename it. Check out TID 10009885, it explains it much better.

      Then reinstall the client locally to the workstation.(full install)

      This fixed our users.

      Other time it happened it was caused by the email message itself. Every time the user replied they crashed. I deleted that message and tried reply on another message it all was fine.
