Hard disk controllers not configured pro

By tombeiii ·
While running win98 s/2 on a IBM Think Pad 600, under System Properties, Devise Manager, the hard disk controllers lists a Intel 82371 AB/EB PCI BUS Master IDE Controller @ IRQ 14. Below that are two Standared BUS Mastering IDE hard disk Controller. One @ IRQ 14 and one @ IRQ 15. The Intel 82371 AB/EB has an "!" in frount of it and none of the setings can be changed. I have remover these configuerations and rebooted only to find them re installed. Any ideas as to how I can resolve this conflict?

A reload would solve the problem if infact the drivers are installed incorectly. If this does not sove a conflict go into your bios and set irq 14 and 15 to pci not plug and play. If it is only that the "!" is bothering you serach the reg for "82371 AB/EB" and set the value to commn device. this is only cosmetic and the reg is sensetive (be carefull).

Also the secondary contoler may not have any drives conected to it. By disabling the secoday controler through may also resolve the conflict.

There's a PCI bridge fix available from Intel that should cure a few problems with the installation of those. It can be located at http://developer.intel.com/design/software/drivers/platform/440.htm. Installation is pretty simple no options to choose and reboot when finished. When you're done you'll see a whole fleet of items appear as new hardware found. just wade through that, you may have to reboot a few times. With 95 anyways, there was a chance that you had to remove and then reinstall the busmaster drives. I'm not exactly sure how 98 handles this, but you may have to update the driver for the hard disk controller in the device manager.

Just to give you an idea on what that's supposed to look like a defuult device manager configuration for the IBM thinkpad 600 can be located at
http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/DSHY-42DTPB.html?selectarea=SUPPORT&brand=root

Hope that helps you

If your secondary IDE controller is disabled in BIOS but not in Win98 you can get this error. In Device Manager check the properties for the AB/EB controller. Under settings, set it so that only the primary IDE channel is enabled and reboot. That may get rid of that pesky, but harmless exclamation point.

Try re booting in safe mode (press f8 during start up or hold the crtl key. Delete all the hard drive controllers. Re boot and let windows install the hard disk controler again. Make sure that you have the drivers for the hard disk controller (goto IBM web site or windrivers.com)also have the win98 disk. Windows should prompt you for the driver disk. If this does not work try same as above and deleting the drivers that the controller is using.
