hard disk problem

I partitioned my hard disk. I put c: as a primary and d: as a extended dos partition. after installing win98 i try to open d: but not opened. it returns the warning as "Device is not accessible".The device attached to the system is not functioning. Please give me some tips to rectify this problem

Did you format the D drive?

Insert the Startup disk in floppy disk,select option (2)run setup without cd rom support
At, command prompt type in Fdisk,select option (4)to view the infomation on drive d,if you see the drive partition,press escape and reboot computer with floppy,at command prompt type format d:
Proceed to format,this should make the drive accessible

it sounds like you need to format the d: drive before it can be recognized.

Did you create a logical drive in the Extended DOS partition?

If not, you need to run fdisk again and define a logical drive.

Then, you need to format the drive.

You can format the drive from either a DOS (floppy) boot, or from My computer or Windows Explorer.
Just right click on the drive, and select format.
Make sure that the option to make the drive bootable is NOT checked.
