Hard Drive filled to capacity virus like

By Casemaker ·
Hi,
I have a computer that the customer reported that after being on the internet the computer started acting funny. One of the error messages before it stopped loading was Initialization of the help center failed, ms error # 21347024784. The hard drive is now full to capacity and will not boot. A svanreg /restore to an old date did nothing to improve the problem. When I boot with the me disk it shows the hdd maxed out. Is there a fix for this or do I need to restore the os.
Thanks

Not to nitpick, but when you say you used the me disk I assume it is a WinME OS?

The best favour you can do for your customer is install WIN98SE or XPPro.

For WinME user that have these types of problems, I won't even offer to help unless theyare ready to at least use a somewhat decent OS, in which case I set it up from free and save myself the ongoing ME headaches.

Don't forget to add a firewall (software or hardware) sounds like your customer has been hacked by a backdoor trojan.

You don't say what if any anti virus software is on this PC. Will it boot to safemode? Did you run a virus scan? Did it find anything? If so check the vendor website for removal if needed. You should also run adaware, and or Spybot to see what all is going on in the background. If you do have to reload Windows do try to upgrade to a less problematic OS.

Use a Win98 boot disk or something simialr and boot off that. Then clean up the junk and temp files (Temporary Internet Files Folder, Temp Folder, Temp files, etc.) After you have several 100 MB available, try to boot ME and see what happens...

The computer will not boot to safe mode. I atached the hdd to another pc with xp pro and updated virus def. It said wrong protocol. The xp hdd is ntfs, however, I have used this method in the past with no error message. The pc in question has av butnot updated dedfinitions accordong to customer. When I use boot disk either 98 or me it lets me do a DIR /P of the c: drive then when it gets to the report it locks and I reboot.
