Hard Drive Noise?

By llamashoes ·
Lately everytime my computer is turned on the hard drive (I assume) makes this loud growling/humming noise. By the time win98se loads and the applications have loaded the growling fades away and doesn't come back. It only does it on a cold boot, not on a restart. I'm always afraid to shut it down thinking that it's going to explode next time I start it back up again. Afraid it might be dying...any ideas?

Hard Drive Noise?

by Keblerelf In reply to Hard Drive Noise?

Well, it's possible that it could be the hard drive by chance. If it ever starts back up making the noise after running for a bit when there is hard drive activity then that's where it's at. If not then I would check the fans in the system, specifically the fan on power supply. I've ran across some before that were in fairly dusty environments that after being shut down for a bit the dust would settle in the fan and once it was started it would make a huge amount of noise until it worked the dust back out again. The best check we used to do was somehow keep the fan from spinning for a few seconds upon boot up. No noise while the fan's stopped then that's what it is. If the noise is still there then it's something else. Just be careful whatyou use to stop the fan and don't do it for a super long time...it is part of the power supply we are talking about. :) If it's the fan then depending on what you want to do you can possibly replace just the fan, if not power supplies are cheap too.
