Hard Drives too Hot to Touch

By billiewebbjr ·
My system is:
abit 7 mobo
512 DDR
G-Force 2 with 128
Two 60-gig WD hard drives(Zero striping RAID array)

While my sys temp is 50 degrees (C) and my CPU is 47.5 degrees (C), my hard drives are too hot to tuch. Is this normal behavior for RAID drives or do I need help?

ThanX
Billie

High speed drives do get hot.

In a RAID setup, the drive access can be more, creating additional heat.

If your drives are too hot to touch, they are hot enough that you are likely reducing the life of the drives.

I suggest that you review your case setup and layout to increase air flow over the drives.

The case I have places the drives in the path of my front case fan.

If you cannot change the drive locations for more air flow, you may want to invest in hard drive coolers. Or even a couple of small fans to mount near the drives to move air over them.

In my experience, WD has been known to really get hot. Especially if you only run the standard cooling devices. At the very least, invest in a couple of case fans. If you have all your drives (optical included) clustered together, like in a baby-atx case, consider investing in a new Mid-tower case and perhaps a dual-fan power supply. In the end, you will save yourself the life of the drives.

just a thought! :)

Jesse
