Hardware neutral backups

By gr ·
I am investigating how to minimize work and storage for backups for our 15 PCS and 2 servers. So far I have read about Microsofts ImageX, HAL, NewSid and Acronis Universal Restore. Has anyone successfully implemented/tested hardware neutral backups. Do you have any recommendations/tips/disaster stories.

What are you trying to back up?

Do you need just the data on each system, the system state, and/or the entire system?

I recommend Ghost. It's a good product and pretty easy to implement.

A single hardware neutral image excluding user data

We have 15 workstations, a mixture of brands, models etc. Not one the same. But all running essentially the same apps. So rather than 15 separate bare metal images (approx 300Gb) I have read that it can be possible to have one image that will restore on any hardware. Eg Acronis promote Universal Restore and Microsoft Web site refers to ImageX and HAL.

Ya, Acronis is a good product, I have also recently seen Enteo and that's a pretty sweet product as well.
