HD does not boot - divide overflow error

By jsiddiqu ·
I used partition magic to resize HD and something went wrong. Now I can not boot PC even from bootable floppy if the HD is connected. I get message ' divide overflow error'. HD shows up in Bios though.

HD does not boot - divide overflow error

moving HDD to another machine with its own master drive and working on it there is your best option. If this is not possible, see if you can test another HDD in your machine and see if it boots OK. Otherwise try the following:

-remove and redetect HDD from BIOS if possible.
-check boot order - FDD,CDROM,HDD1
-set HDD as slave (this sometimes works - at least for me :) )

If any of this works and you can get to dos prompt, if the HDD is w9x, type fdisk /mbr to fix any boot record probs, and then reboot off HDD - may work...

Since you have a .gov address, I assume you have a tape backup of the hard drive.
Usually we just reimage the drive in a case like this.(also called "restore from tape")
It is the most reliable solution in a case like this.
