Our Small Business Server 2000 is the only Domain Controller we have in our company. It has two network cards, one connected directly to the internet, and the other into the internal LAN. It comes bundled with ISA Server 2000 which is our firewall/router/proxy.
The server is becoming unstable which crashes everytime we move the mouse at the server. We wish to do a rebuild but keep existing Active Directory.
1. How can we backup the Active Directory?
We plan to install a secondary Domain Controller – obviously using plain Windows 2000 Server. I found an article on adding additional DCs to a SBS domain:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sbs/2000/maintain/addsrvrs.mspx
However am wondering will the AD be replicated from the SBS to the 2nd DC? If so, what will happen if we reformated/reinstalled SBS PC from scratch? It will create a new domain (irrespective of whether it was the same name as before), but this domain will not be recognised by the 2nd DC? Is this correct?
2. How to reformat/reinstall current SBS2000 PC and restore previous AD?
