help sharing files vpn

By dakid ·
Hello IT world
I recently setup a vpn connection on xp pro sp2 systems (home to office)with no problems. Now what I am having trouble is setting up a mapped network drive to browse through the files on vpn server. While connected through vpn, I've gone to my network places> add network place> and then went to where I input \\server\share and I get an error saying "the folder you entered is not valid". I've made sure my vpn server folder is shared. Please help

can you give more description of the VPN you have setup, are you using routing & remote access through windows server software? one thing that ive noticed is that in order to browse through network neighborhood on your workplace network from a home machine is that things tend to work alot better if the machine at home is joined to the domain, and therefor you login through dial-in access and then its as if your machine was connected to your work network, which then would make sence for you to be able to connect to network shares. Think about that.

Using UNC access needs a lot of access
verifications to be done.
You might want to look into mapping a drive (net
use Q: \\server\share
ans use Q from then on , or join the machines in
a domain.

Name resolution over remote connections can time out before they succeed. Using the FQDN instead of the NetBIOS name tends to help. That would also apply to drive letter mapping.
