Help with a Dell external DVD ROM

By Cool&Deadly ·
i have a dell external dvd rom which was given to me by a friend but the only thing is want to use it on an hp laptop. The usb port on the dell looks like a double usb port and was made to plug into 2 ports at the same time on the dell laptop but it cannot be plugged into my hp. Does anyone know if there is a part i can purchase to place on the on the dell's double usb cord so i can use it on my hp computer?

That 1 USB Ports do not supply enough Current to drive a external Drive, You need a Standard Y Cable which has one connector to plug in at the external Device and 2 USB Plugs to plug it at the Computer.

Failing that maybe 2 USB Extension Leads may work here but they may need to be shaved down to fit the double Socket of the Dell Appliance. If they do need shaving down make sure to have some insulation between the 2 Metal Cases of the USB Plugs where they plug into the Dell Lead. you can glue them together after you have then both fitting the socket and insulated from each other.

Another possibility here is particularly with Net Books is that they do not have sufficient power to drive devices like those so if that is the case here you'll need to use a Powered USB Hub between the Computer and the Dell Drive.
