High memory usage on Exchange 5.5 SP2

By Monkey Boy ·
Have a server that runs Exchange 5.5 SP2.
This is showing very high memory usage on STORE.EXE (approx 870MB with 1Gb Total Physical Memory). Cant work out why the Information Store is using so much memory. It obviously appears as though there is a memory leak somewhere. The server hosts no mailboxes at all and is just used for Public Folders (6,000+). Can't upgrade to SP3 yet cause we've found the same memory leak in SP3 which is fixed by hotfix Q241516. Is there anyway of finding out more specificly why the STORE.EXE is using so much memory. Task manager shows >5% total processor utilisation overall. Anyone come accross this fault before ? Rebooting before anyone asks doesn't fix the fault. I still need to check the event logs to see if there's anything in there.

Are ther any inconsistencies in the Public store. Try running isinteg on the pub store.

You've got a multi-gig database and wondering why the process is using 870 meg of ram?

Exchange 5.5 will grab as much memory as it can and release it back to the os if there is demand from other processes.

Relax... don't worry about it, that's what it is supposed to do, there is no fault.

Answer 2 is correct. Exchange will take as much memory as it can. That is the default setting. I believe you can limit the amount of memory Exchange uses by re-running performance optimizer.

I strongly suggest you run optimiser B/cos you know exchange server is always too memory & disk space hungry.
I have a similar problem with my mail server though mine hosts mailboxes, but once i ran uptimizer it solved the problem. Also check the apps you run on that server and how much disk space you've got.

If there is a memory leak you will see you memory usage go up and up. If it is staying at a consistent level then I would not worry. If it is going up and up without coming down at all it could be a program such as an anti virus scanner or some other program that interacts with the store.
