Hijacked dialler

By jhnknwls ·
I suspect my dial up connection has been hijacked.
Not only do I get dial up popping up regularly when I'm off-line my modem speaker has been silenced. Have spybot installed plus McAfee 2004 ver 80 but neither have detected anything amiss. Help please

Need a little more information.
1.) What O/S or you running?
2.) Does your dial up try to connect or just opens up?
3.) Have you always used McAfee for a Anti-Virus protection?
4.) Does the dail up open on right after a boot up?
5.) Is there a particular program running when this happens?

The answer to all thess question will help.

There is a program called hijack this v1.97.7 this program will find the hijacker and fix it Im sure you have updated your spybot because that will also help with any newly discovered pests.

Run msconfig and select the startup tab. See if anything unusual is running from there. You can disable startup items and if its needed you can re-enable them later. There may be an auto-update from something that's trying to connect also AOL can cause this if its set to go online

Suspect a previous program installation if you
recently installed one.

Other possibilities would be from visiting any
web page able to exploit IE vulnerabilities.
All security settings should be in place for

Quick location method to find possible dialer:
Start-Find-Files/folders Type- dial - into
the 'named' location and anything dealing with
'dial' will appear. Investigate anything out
of the ordinary concerning dialers.
