Multiprogramming refers to a computing environment that can run multiple programs at the same time. This is done by time slicing the processor(s). Specifically, a processor will execute one program for a short period of time and then switch to another program. The switch can occur when a programs time is up or when the program must wait for some event, such as the arrival of data from a disk file.

A multiprogramming environment can have one or more processors. A multiprocessing environment always has more than one processor.
