VPN technology

I suggest you look into VPN technologies that will emulate an out of office worker as if they were in the office, on your local network.

That is the most secure and widely accepted forms of file transfers for remote employees.

Shared Area, VPN, Google Docs

I'm not sure 100% what you're asking, so this could vary depending on size and requirements.

I think you're asking about creating the space on the server itself, which you'll need to create a shared folder with the appropriate NTFS and Share permissions. There's a link below, but in short: Create a folder called "BlahBlah" (or whatever). Right-click the folder and choose 'Sharing'. Give it a 'shared' name like "SharedArea" and some default permissions. Access it at \\[serverName]\SharedArea

As far as getting them connected, you'd typically use VPN. Microsoft has free VPN services built into Windows.

Another option is to outsource this feature. For a small fee, you can setup users on Google Docs. It's cheap and easy. http://docs.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=49008
