how do i get people to understand the fe

By sumantranaik ·
I am a it consultant and and my main focus is on providing project consultancies to companies. Most of the companies specially so in india just want to jump into the IT cause theres a lot of money in it. In doing so they
do not realise the kind of work involved and the investment required. That to some extent is bearable..what is worse is that they come up with some fancy imaginative ideas withought any base and expect to get outputs withought understanding the feasibility of such projects. Some of them just drive you up the wall with their time frame and their demands. You cannot risk telling them that its not possible as it is reflected upon as your incompetency...How do you tackle such people??

Develop your own proposal of what the cost, manpower, and schedule to do the project. Also generate some estimates of cost and manpower if you reduce the scope of the project. Submit these even if they does not meet what is specified in the request. If you receive complaints, address them, but if it is not feasible, just tell them that honestly this is the best you can do.

Leave it up to the company to decide whether to accept your proposal or not. If they decide you are "incompetent," that's too bad, but make sure they view you as "honest." After being burned by dishonest consultants who tell them what they want to hear, the companies will return to the honest ones.

Put you trust in the long run and state what is in your powerto complete.

i think your big problem is you don't wanna risk telling them that it's not possible. first of all, it's 'not possible' is it's 'not feasible' there is a difference.

besides saying it's not possible. you need to tell them why, and to great detail. if they don't want to listen, that's their problem. your job is to give them the best solution. and if you're afraid to do that you're in the wrong field.

People usually learn things through the hard way. Show them your feasible plan and let them get other not feasible plans from other companies. When they end up being burnt by other companies, not feasible plans, they will come back to you. That's ifthey manage to stay afloat after being burnt. Eduacation takes a long time. Perhaps you can quote some case studies for them and tell them what is a feasible solution based on the case studies you had shown. If bigger, better companies did a projectaccording to a certain scale, how do they think they can beat those bigger companies for a better scale (i.e not feasilble plans)?

You must focus on a presentation to them which outlines and illustrates how they can achieve their goals in the most timely AND most cost effective manner. Furthermore, don't let them tell you what they want you to do, per se. Rather ask them to explain what they want to achieve. And you, as a consultant, must tell them the best way to do that.

With any project, you have a "point A" and a "point B" (where you are and where you want to go). Ask them to fully explain their "point B", and makedarn sure that you know what their "point A" is. How they get from "point A" to "point B" could be a matter of much discussion and disagreement between the company and the different consultants. Your challenge as a consultant is to present your ideas as the ones that will get them from "point A" to "point B" in the best possible way, and which will also IMPROVE THE COMPANY'S BOTTOM LINE better than any other. (That's the real key.) The shortest distance between two points is always a straight line. By installing a lot of unnecessary "fancy imaginative ideas" the company is diverting from their straight line solution, which would be more costly and will do nothing to help them achieve their real desired end purpose.

You must show them the best road to take. You must show them that your road is the most cost effective. You must show them how your ideas will most improve the bottom line. Show them how to SAVE money and/or how to MAKE money. You do those things & you'll get the job.
