How do you test if a modem works?

By joel ·
Hello All,

I'm a complete newbie and I have little hardware knowledge...but I'm trying to learn. I would appreciate any input on how to troubleshoot a modem. Whenever I try to dial in to my ISP, I get a 630 error. Thank you for your help.

Error 630 means The port was disconnected due to hardware failure. You could try to remove and then re-install the modem but it sounds like it is broken. I would suggest that you get an extrenal 56k Hardware Modem if you are thinking of buying a newone.

If this is 95 or 98, there is a built-in "diagnostic" but it only will tell you if the modem is getting power and set up properly for the appropriate resources of IRQ and I/O address and that it can talk to the computer. It won't tell you if it candetect a dial tone. I have seen several modems that pass the diagnostic and still won't dial in. Detecting the dial tone uses a different part of the circuitry than the windows diagnostic that talks to the modem.

Here's how to test:
In ControlPanel, Modems, you will see list of com ports and modems. Click on the Diagnostics tab, select/highlight the com port your modem is on, then click on the More Info tab. In about 5-8 seconds you should see a window pop up with AT commands on the left and the responses by the modem to each one on the right. At the top of this window you will see the IRQ and address and the type of UART. If you get a message like Can't open port, the modem is not set up and you probably have a conflict. Look in Device Manager und

I agree with the use of the diagnostics utility however it is limited to the number of functions you can perform. A more efficient test is to use the "Hyper Terminal" utility that is installed generally by default on Windows 95/98 machines. With this utility you can give AT command sets to the modem to see if it responds.

One for example (and the most usefull to check and see if you have dial-tone) is to type ATDT and followed by the 7 digit telephone number. You will hear the modem kick onand begin to dial, or it will tell you "no carrier" or "no dial-tone."

I hope this helps,

Mike Dickinson

I agree with the answer regarding testing if the modem actually dials out using Hyperterminal, however why not just used Phone Dialer which is included with Windows. Find it in Acessories/Communications. (May need to be installed). This is the easiest way to check if the modem actually dials out, no problem.
