How does Web Based Messengers like Meebo work?

Hi,
I am curious to know about how web based instant messengers like Meebo work? I have always thought that HTTP is a pull protocol i.e. you cannot have any data on the browser unless you request it on the server. So how does Instant messages of the peers come to the browser?
It will be great if someone can explain me the logic behind it.
