First of all, since you have "dynamic IP addresses", you should get an domain name for your routers, and register them with "dynamic DNS servers" (i.e., etc). You install small piece of software on your PCs and when you turn your DSL connection up, it will update your domain name with your CURRENT IP address. This will solve the problem with dynamic IP addresses.

Now lets talk about VPN. Do you want to establish VPN tunnel between these two routers, from the PC to DLink router, or through routers? First scenario will not work at all - your SMC router is not VPN capable (it can not terminate VPN traffic).

For second scenario, you should probably go with PPTP protocol - first, it's native to Windows, and it works better with NAT translations. Also you may try L2TP - it seems to be not so complicated as well. Sure, you may configure IPSec, but it would be more difficult to run. Read your router's manual, what and how to configure for certain option.

With the third scenario, when you establish VPN tunnel from PC to PC, you should refer to certain vendor's manuals, how to setup software, what should be enabled on the routers, etc.

If you have more questions, you may e-mail me.

Good luck,
