    how to disable DNS?

    hi,
    i want that my computers can not ping each other by name, i only want to ping those two with IP address (both machines are xp).
    they are part of AD.

      in order for AD to work, DNS has to work. Without DNS, then Windows networking would not work, and of course things like browsing the network neighborhood or browsing for printers would not work.

      Just curious, why don’t you want them to be pingable by name?

      Perhaps restrict access to command prompt?

        hi thanks for the reply.
        actually i am doing some testing for that i want to disable Dns, and only want computers to see each other by Ip’s not by name.
        i can do this using Linux machine but want to do the same with windows.

        i dont want to disable command prompt.

      Disconnect them from the DNS server and flush the local resolver caches.

      Or statically set the DNS servers to blank entries in the TCP/IP settings.

      Make sure group policy doesn’t change these things back.

      I don’t suppose you’d have Netbios enabled on domain computers, but if it is, it may still resolve the host names. I’ve heard of stranger things.
