How to find MS License Information?

By w00t.ix ·
Hello everyone,

I just got into a new organization a couple weeks ago, and the other IT person here has only been here for three months...Needless to say, we are always short on information regarding how things are currently set up here. We are trying to find out how many Windows 2003 licenses we purchased with our last server upgrade... Is this something that Microsoft would know or would we have to contact our server vendor? (Another mystery).

How about your accounts payable department

by JamesRL In reply to How to find MS License In ...

If you would have bought the licenses from one or two vendors, have accounts payable pull all the invoices for the past X months, and see if they reconsile with the number of servers.

Calling Microsoft and asking them is inviting them to audit you. Don't do that unless you have an idea where you stand.

The first thing I did is contact the vendors, I then did an software audit using Track-It.

There's other tools you can use:

SAM (MSIA-Microsoft Software Inventory Analyser Tool)
http://www.microsoft.com/uk/licensing/lessthan250/software-asset-management/resources/msia-tool.mspx

and of course how can you forget about BSA
http://www.bsa.org/country/Tools%20and%20Resources.aspx

Good luck.
