how to install a network printer in a workgroup

I plan to install a network printer in my workgroup. There is no server here. and the network printer was connected to the switch.

Sounds like you're using peer-to-peer networking.

Attach the printer to any member of the LAN (do try to avoid an XP Home machine) and make sure that File/Printer Sharing is enabled.

Depending on the printer and the client machines, you may also need to install the printer drivers on each machine.

Use the Add Printer Wizard

Assign the printer and IP address.

Then start the add printer wizard.

Select Local printer attached to the computer but clear the Automatically detect check box,

Click Next and select create a new port. In the Type of Port select Standard TCP/IP.

This will start the Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard.

Click Next and Type the IP address assigned in the first text box and click next. The rest should self explanatory.
