How to setup 4 modems in one computer

By eg5161 ·
Is there anyway to setup a computer with 4 modems in one. the modems that they sell with one modem with 4 port is way too much. is there is a way to have 4 different fax modems so i can utilize my four lines and have it send out faxes on 4 different lines. what computer specs do i need? is it possible.

no i am trying to help a friend of mine that owns a restaurant and they have four fax machines and his mom wakes up every couple of hours to send out the faxes only some can receive at night and some in the morning they had the restaurant for years and I am helping them send out the faxes automatically with the computer. they have a list of people that request it. they are a old school mom and pop restaurant.

Why four?

by CharlieSpencer In reply to no

With modern fax modems and software, they may not need four. How old are the fax machines? They may be slower than a new modem (14.4 or 28.8 vs 56). Fax software today will allow scheduled sending so they can transmit at the time the recipients desire, and spread the rest out through the day.

You may want to inquire how many of the fax recipients have e-mail capability and would prefer e-mail to faxes.

why i need four

by eg5161 In reply to Why four?

because they have four phone lines and the business want them all before 9:00am when they get there. we are only open from 9:00 until 3:00 pm. we are by the court house and it is so busy.

You want to send all the faxes out to the customers by 9:00, right? Have you tested replacing one fax with one computer and a single modem to see how fast it will send out?

If the tests show that a single computer with one or two fax modems isn't enough, you may have to spend a few hundred for a second computer to support the third and fourth lines.

It was possible, but impractical

by CharlieSpencer In reply to How to setup 4 modems in ...

I know it used to be possible, but you could only use two at a time. If you put in four modems, you could assign each one COM1 through COM4. But COM1 and COM3 shared one IRQ, and COM2 and COM4 shared another IRQ (I forget exactly which IRQs). Trying to use both 1/3 or 2/4 at the same time would cause a conflict and one or both modems would shut down. I don't remember if you could remove enough other devices to free up two IRQs and move the COM ports around.

Unless you plan on spamming, why not sign up with a faxing service? It may be cheaper than four phone lines.

i have looked in the fax service and it costly they only do some of them 2000 a month for $14 but they send out 500 a day because they have daily specials and loyal customers. this mom and pop store has been around for a long time.

500 faxes a day???

by CharlieSpencer In reply to no fax service

Have they considered faxing once a week on Sunday with the all the specials for the week listed?

Do they receive orders via incoming faxes? Have they considered sending by e-mail? That volume of e-mail would require a business account with an ISP, but that would probably be cheaper than the three fax lines.
