How to upgrade from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005?

By phatfield ·
I have database on SQL 2000 and I need to upgrade to 2005. I have upgraded server from Windows 2000 to 2003. No problems there, but not really sure how to do Sql upgrade. Do I need to uninstall 2000 first and then do a new install of 2005?

Install it over SQL 2000

Just run the setup for SQL 2005, it will search for the old versions and do the upgrade.

But take a backup for the SQL server, because the upgrade process is irreversible.

There is a lot of changes between SQL 2000 and 2005, check if your applications can read the data from SQL 2005 DB, or has support for SQL 2005
