HP Brio - reinstall problem

By steve.parkhouse ·
HP Brio running W98. Various problems (intermit BSOD, won't shutdown, GPF's etc) so I decided to reinstall W98. I ran setup from Win\opt\cabs and it completed OK but on restart it stops at the DOS prompt. If I type win it says I am MS_DOS mode doI want to return to Normal mode. If I enter yes the machine restarts, momentarily shows the Windows sky page and drops out to the DOS prompt again. It will boot in safe mode, but if I uncheck all boxes it tries to run setup (and fails) on restart.Anybody help please, I don't really want to reformat.

Do some general cleanup erasing temp directory files, and any .tmp files in the windows directory
Then run a scandisk to cleanup crosslinked files and rerun setup. Hopefully that should get it going again for you, otherwise do you have nortons systemworks? Try windoctor from there and that may fix your problems for you.

I seem to recall another one of these out there wher the msdos.sys file on the root of the pc (hidden/system file) had some line set=1 if it was dos=1 or msdos=1 I'm not sure but that line needed to be removed, do a search in techrepublic for closedanswers and you should be able to pull it up, was from december look for msdos.sys.
Good luck

found it : from soul rider

One of the following may apply to change windows setup using the old drive
1)The Ifshlp.sys file is missing from the windows folder
2)The Config.sys file contains a line pointing to a previous version of the Ifshlp.sys file
3)The [Paths] section in the Msdos.sys file is incorrect
4)A winboot.ini file from a previous incomplete install is present in the root folder of theboot disk
1)For Windows 98,restart your computer, press and hold down the CNTRL Key-choose safe mode
Use text editor to open the Config.sys file
Remove the line that loads Ifshlp
Save and then close Config.Sys file
2)Incorrect [PATHS] section in Msdos.sys file
choose safe mode
Type following line at command prompt
attrib-s -h -r msdos.sys using text editor
3)Verify following lines in Msdos files
[PATH]
WinDir=<windows>
WinBoot Dir=<windows>
Host Win Boot DRV=C
For reference see microsoft knowledge base article Q139063

Thanks very much for your help with this. Didn't see the above until too late. I tried to delete the registry files, rename the old windows and reinstall alongside. It worked ok but it screwed up the monitor settings and would not let me change them. I ended up with a full format and re-install. Will keep this just in case. Thnx again.
