ok, the specs are: HP Pavillion XG843 Celeron 800mgz, 128 ram, 20gig hd, CD-Writer plus... The problem is shutdown... I've tried just about everything in the knoledgebase and cannot find the solution. Ive re-formatted...(all done properly) and it was workin fine.. as soon as I did the Windows Update for ME, it started. I did all that it said on: http://www.hp.com/cposupport/personal_computing/support_doc/bph07148.html and no luck. Has anyone had the same problem? Its a friends computer and Iwelcome anyone with the solution! Thx.

Not enough details, buddy. Does it freeze when you try to shut down? Or does it go to the "Windows" screen and then do nothing? Before you install the critacal updates you have to install all the latest drivers for motherboard, chipset, video, sound, modem, and DirectX. I always install IE 5.5sp2 or 6.0 also before doing any critacal updates. If this does not solve your problem, the next step would be to use a different copy of Windows ME. If you're using an HP restore CD, it could very well be corrupted; I've seen it before. Installing from an ME original CD may mean you have to pull each component(i.e. the video, sound, and modem) if they are not integrated. There will be a model no. and/or FCC ID stamped on each card. As well, the motherboard is stamped with model no. Find the driver for each and install after windows is loaded. After that everything thing is gravy.
Here's a great (non-Microsoft and non-HP) site that has collected a number of solutions by users for various issues. This link is for ME shutdown problems (some solutions are simple, some are not):
If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem. Also please exercise your best judgment when posting in the forums--revealing personal information such as your e-mail address, telephone number, and address is not recommended.
