    HP Scanners – ARRRGGGHHH!!!!

    Locked

Trying to install HP scanners. Tried BOTH the SJ 5200 and the SJ 6300 with no luck. Trying to install them in a number of totally different (different chipsets, hardware, etc.)generic otherwise rock-solid systems. Using different OS (W95B & W98). Tried using different interfaces (SCSI & USB for the 6300 – USB for the 5200) NOTHING WORKS! We get the same BLUE SCREEN OE’s & OD’s right after the scanner is “found” by the OS when the system reboots after the Precision Scan software is installed. HP has been no help at all. By some MIRACLE, we were able to install BOTH scanners into only
one machine so far…so Prec.Scan software MUST not be defective. But it will not install into any other system…PERIOD.

Almost certainly this is a Windows issue. check the versions of the OS’s that are working. Currently there are three versions of Win98 that I am aware of. I believe if you compare them (working and non working) you will find they are different. I would suggest that you check out the software vendor’s web site. I think you will find version conflict information there, and possibly a patch. Version conflicts involving the many of the Windows controls are quite common. You may find that the software will only run properly on the latest version of win98. You should also note what major Microsoft products are installed on the working machine. Microsoft office, Internet explorer, and a number of other products represent significant updates to the controls working within the OS. Good luck.

We have tried everything from W95 OSR2.1 to W98 & W98 2nd Ed. These are all clean OS installs with nothing much at all installed except basic drivers. It doesn’t matter which OS, which machine, which interface, which cables, or which of these 2 HP scanners we try, we get the same blue screen errors. Hows that for compatibility?!!!
        Thank you anyway…

Recently purchased a new HP scanner. Have you checked the HP website for driver updates?

These types of proprietary HP ScanJet scanners don’t provide any “drivers” on the web. The Precision Scan software isn’t available there. We have checked that we do have the latest from HP however. Thank you anyway.

Are you using one of those wheel mouse by chance? If you are, try disabling the wheel mouse driver (just use the generic mouse functions) and proceed with installing the software. Restart without the scanner plugged in and see if system will bootup OK. Then plug in the USB scanner. It should be working properly after the device is detected and configured.

No wheel mouse. Here is how it goes on every combination we try: We install the Precision Scan software WITHOUT ERROR and then reboot. Upon rebooting, Windows finds the device and it is when the computer installs and configures the device that itimmediately crashes…EVERY SINGLE TIME…and its Safe Mode or nothing from then on.
