    i need help

    i have 2 pc,s brought to me. both came from a local collage. both have the same problem. i was asked to remove all collage data & reinstall win. 98. i [cleaned] fdisk, formated. & installed 98.at the last of install, plug & play, ect., it lost the cdrom. i have retried 5 times and still the same results. is there somthing on the motherboard thats causeing this or what? please help me.

      Are you sure they are IDE CDROMs, not SCSI. It is rare, i know, but still possible. Can you get hold of another CDROM, stick it in and see what happens? 2 PCs, from the same place, with the same symptom?

      Make sure they are IDE drives and if so, get another one – not expensive, and you will always use it – and substitute.

      I can’t think of anything on the motherboard unless they are old 486 or very early pentiums. Will be interested to hear others opinions

        yes te cdroms are ide, and i have tried 2 brand new cdroms with the same results.

      Just curious, is your Win 98 CD an ‘update disk’ or a clean install? Perhaps not the problem here but have had same problem when by mistake trying to reinstall Win 95 from an upgrade CD many years ago.
