IAS Service "hangs" and stops authenticating in Server 2003

By gdavies ·
Hi All,

Has anyone ever had any experience with the IAS service hanging in Server 2003?

We recently deployed a WLAN using PKI, and most of the time it works very well.

Occasionally the IAS service is listed as Started, but it isn't authenticating and users can't access the WLAN.

There's no relevant information in Event Viewer.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on?

I was going to setup a redundant IAS server, but because the service is still running on the first server I don't think it will fail over properly. Any thoughts?

Few questions

by georgeou In reply to IAS Service "hangs" and s ...

1. Are you sure it's IAS stopping and not the Access Point. I've had the RADIUS component on various APs die before.

2. Make sure you turn on Event Viewer logging for both success and failures.

3. What kind of AP are you using? Does the problem go away if you reboot the AP or reboot the IAS server?

4. I would get a copy of Ethereal and install it on the Server and record the entire session while you attempt to authenticate. This will verify if the RADIUS request is physically hitting the IAS server or not.

5. Be sure you don't use the quick connect option. I've had to use a sniffer to track down that problem that it was incompatible with Cisco APs intermittently.
