IBM SCSI hard drive!

By mayon ·
I bought an IBM SCSI (23GB) big hard drive with 50 pins conn. from mail order and it doesn't came with manuals, cables, SCSI controller. I would like to have it working with a regular (clone) PC. What needs to be done?

Do I need to upgrade the BIOS? Look for
SCSI drivers? Any special controller?
Any suggestion(s)? 'Need help....

Thanks in advance!

You just need to get a SCSI controller with a BIOS on it (Adaptec 2940 family with 50-pin connector). It will come with the drivers and cables needed. You do not have to upgrade the mainboard BIOS, as SCSI controllers do not rely on them to support the hard drive. Set it as if no hard drives were installed. The BIOS on the SCSI card will do all the translation necessary for the system to see the drive, though if your PC is old, it may limit the cylinders to 1023

Agree with answer !. In addition remember the red stripe on the cable is for pin 1. Would recommend Adaptec controller. Set BIOS as if no hard drive is installed. When the PC boots , you will see a "SCSI BIOS installed" message.

Look at the model number on the drive and do a search on the IBM web site to get the hard drive specs you want. Here's a link. http://www-1.ibm.com/support/ Make sure the drive is properly terminated if it is not auto-terminating. Also completely agree with #1. The Fonz Lives!

I agree with answer #1 just remember when setting the controller it must be set to 7 and the drive itself must be set to 0 if it is the primary drive.
