identify a switch port

By dolteanu ·
Hi,
there is a chance to identify a switch port on wich is connected another switch?
My task is to find only the ports on wich computers are connected.

Switch Description : Cisco IOS Software, C2960 Software (C2960-LANBASEK9-M), Version 12.2(44)SE6, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1) Copyright (c) 1986-2009 by Cisco Systems, Inc. Compiled Mon 09-Mar-09 18:10 by gereddy
Thanks in advance,

What exactly are you trying to do?

by Brenton Keegan In reply to identify a switch port

Are you trying to identify which switch ports go to an empty jack?

If so you have a couple options. Your switch should be able to to tell you what MAC address is associated with each switch port. This means you can find out what computer is plugged into what port on the switch.

Another option is to use a tone generator.

documentation

by CG IT In reply to What exactly are you tryi ...

someone ought to have created documentation that shows the physical layout of the network and what is connected where.

as Brenton Keegan mentions the switch can tell you what is connected to it. After that it's just a matter of matching up names to addresses [MAC or IP]. If you run DHCP you can find the leases which will give you who has what address. The switch has a web interface that you can also use to get information.

I suspect

that he doesn't have that documentation.

I remember being asked to document that for an organization once. They had zero documents. Even the wall jacks were unlabeled.

If you have cdp neighbor enabled try this

by Forum Surfer In reply to identify a switch port

you can just type

show cdp neighbor

at the switch's enable prompt. That will tell you any adjacent cisco devices, many non devices also run cisco discovery protocol. Additionally, show cdp neighbor detail will give you model numbers, serial numbers, ip addy and ios version of neighboring devices.
