IE 6 will not work

By av49gr ·
I installed a trial version of Norton Antivirus 2004 and after getting it updated I performed a full system scan. Suprisingly this lasted well over 5 hours for a single PC... While at it I performed a check for mistakes with Spybot Search and Destroy and cleared the mistakes found on previous occasions. When I finished I tried to connect to the internet but when the Internet Explorer loaded the home page it closed. The same happened with other pages as well. I loaded Netscape 7,1 and Opera and everything works fine, hence connection is ok. I tried system restore but my last saved point was quite long ago and would not uploaded it. The same with other restore points made by the regular windows update. It only uploaded the last one which was the same day and the problem with IE still there. I managed to unistall and reinstall IE 6 and its updates but still nothing. I would not mind so much if it was not for the windows update feature needing IE to operate... thanks for the help...

Go through the Internet Explorer settings and return everything to the default.

Do the normal deletion of all temporary files and cookies.

Run msconfig to see what all is starting and uncheck anything that seems unusual. If its needed you can recheck them once you know what they are. A search on for fileanames in the startup list can be helpful in determining what program it is that's starting.

If the page just wouldn't load I'd be inclined to blame a corrupt Winsock. Which can be restored by remoiving all networking and dial up features and reinstalling. To remove Dialup Networking use add Remove Programs, Windows Setup.

Check your internet settings they might be set too high. I was having the same problem when I first installed IE6. I placed everything on medium and seems to work fine now. If that doesnt work. Also check your LAN settings. Then I would check MSCONFIG and start disabling firewalls to see if that fixes your problem. If that fixes I would then enable them one by one until the problem happens agains. Then configure the one that is giving you the problem.
