    Incredible Slowdoan

    Locked

    by matt ·

My XP machine (HP, 256 RAM, upgrade from ’98) has become incredibly slow, and running into lots of errors. Examples include:

    1. Click My Computer, and I get the search flashlight for 5-10 seconds before anything appears.
    2. Word doesn’t load.
    3. QB and other apps load very slowly, and sometimes only appear as processes (not applications)
    4. ‘Server Busy’ appears 2-3 times a day
    5. When I reboot, I get ‘Notificatoin Wnd for RNAdmin’
    6. First message running Norton Disk Doctor is it can’t find a partitioned drive, though I don’t have one. Program proceeds normally after that
    7. After running Nortin AV, I got RT error R6025, Pure virtual function call
    8. Have seen RT error 90, permission denied
    9. Have seen ‘not enough quote is available to process this command’
10 Some apps simply don’t load

    I have tried the following:
    1. Norton AV (clean, I was hit with SIrcam)
    2. Ad-aware (spyware): detected items, then clean
    3. Norton DIsk Doctor: clean
    4. Scandisk
    5. Defrag
    6. Re-installed XP

I’ve installed some programs that don’t uninstall (McAfee AV, Verizon DSL diagnostics).

I’ve also downloaded and tried some diagnotic tools. Some provide numbers that I can’t do much with, others don’t start.

Things were fine for more than a year. This machine is the server on a fairly inactive p2p network.

Any ideas? I’m practically at a standstill. Thank you very much.

    Matthew

Most of the diagnostics you’re running will not help with this type of situuation.
You’re problem still sounds virus related.
Not good to have Mcafee and Norton and all those utilities all running on the same system. You didn’t mention it and may have done so but you should have uninstalled all virus and diagnostics software before upgrading the OS.
If you go to McAfee’ support site http://www.mcafeehelp.com/ they have manual uninstall prodecures.
Also the virus you had may be still hiding around on your systems. Go to this link for instructions on how to detect/remove SirCam. http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_99141.htm

I have to agree on the virus being a likely cause. The slow down (many virus use lots of memory doing things in the background and sending out via email) and the nonsense errors all point that way. I would fdisk, repartition and put in NOTHING butthe operating system and which ever virus check you like. Then hop on line, download the newest virus definitions and run it through the system. Then go to http://www.pcpitstop.com. I was having problems and this site found them quickly and really sped my system up – specially the internet connection (hardware related). Then if all goes well, load everything else one at a time and checking regularly for speed.

The other option might be your system is overheating or your have a RAM chip going bad. Both cause odd errors that are hard to recreate and you never know when they will hit. Check your fans on your power source and processor. Replace your RAM with other chips.

      Good luck!
