Internet connection problems via WRT54G wireless router

By mc2366 ·
I'm new on this site and for some reason my first post isn't showing up. Hopefully it will this time.
I have Earthlink as my provider. I run the Internet through a wireless router which is connected to my desktop. The connection here is almost always okay.
My laptop is the issue. Every now and then my laptop loses the Internet connection and won't re-connect. I don't remember what I did last time to make it work unfortunately. The laptop is picking up the wireless signal (excellent quality) and says it is connected to the router. But I can't connect to the Internet. Can someone help with this? I need it explained in layman's terms if possible :)
Thanks in advance.

I don't know if this will work but it's worth a try

Unplug the power from the Router with the Wireless Access point on it for about 30 seconds. Plug back in and see if it works.

If it does there was a spike on the mains line which scrambled the workings of the Wireless part of the router.

I have experienced some of the newer routers of the new "N" type have been interfering with the older "B" and "G" types, causing the type of faults you are seeing. Most of the time I just need to reset the router from the router control panel and that gets everything back working again. I have had some neighbors trying to use my router with their wireless cards, so I've had to place some screens and foil on the wall by the antenna to block both their usage and the interference from the other neighbors units. So far has be pretty effective.
