Internet Connection sharing between 2 pcs

By genius1232 ·
I have a Windows XP desktop and one Windows XP laptop. I have a hathway modem having usb port as well as rj45 type connector.

I am able to connect laptop and desktop via a cross over cable. Both of them can ping each other and share files.I have used the Ethernet port of my desktop for this LAN connection to the laptop.

I have connected internet connection to my desktop via the USB port of my modem. (I guess there is a usb modem means a lan card)

Now my desktop is connected to internet as well as the laptop but the laptop is not able to connect to internet.

The ip address of my internet conection (in desktop) is x.x.x.221, and ip address of my desktop in LAN is x.x.x.222 and ip-address of laptop is configured to x.x.x.223 also each one of them have same subnet mask configured.

still I am not even able to ping the ipaddress of internet connection from the laptop.

Also I have installed a proxy server on my desktop and configured the laptop to route internet traffic via the proxy server. The proxy sever has the same ip as the internet connection and a free port assigned.

I am not able ping my desktop internet ip but I am able to ping my desktop Lan connection.Any suggestions ???

In the Network connections I see 2 LAN connection -- 1> is for the LAN connection with the laptop and 2> is for connecting my desktop to the internet.

Please suggest me what more configuration do I need to access internet from the laptop via my desktop.
I dont want to purchase any router for this ..

Kindly assist.
