internet connectivity issue

By ajdias ·
I have an internet connectivity problem. ISP is Comcast, modem is Motorola SB5100, Windows 98SE. The problem is that there are several sites (at least 11) that consistently time out. I've spoken with many technicians at Comcast but they have been unable to help. I've: disabled the firewall and antivirus, reset security settings to default, release/renew lease, cycle modem, reinstall browser, reregister modem, etc. The sites are consistent and browser doesn't matter (IE and Mozilla). Traceroute to the sites in question have the same results - first hop times out, 2nd and 3rd hop are Comcast ips, 4th hop is and results in "Destination net unreachable".

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

rename it to hosts.txt
what is in there?
if you see anything other then localhost
and you see the sites you are trying to get to,
well then there you go....

leave hosts.txt as is, then reboot your machine
try the sites again

(98se does not have a flushdns option like 2K/xp has)

Thank you for replying. I should have mentioned that I don't have a hosts file. Thank you.

use nslookup to resolve the IP of the sites you are trying to go to.

then ping the same site,

are they the same IP? If they are different then you have a hosts file someplace, or even looking at lmhosts..

it's just odd that all of the sites you are trying to go to are resolving to the same IP address.

I'm sorry I must not have explained it well

by ajdias In reply to nslookup

It's not that the site resolves to the same ip. It's that on the fourth hop of the traceroute it always gets stopped at the same ip along the route. That's the common denominator. It's always the same ip that stops me with the destination net unreachable message. I should also mention that I get the same result if I attempt to visit the site plugging in the ip instead of the url. Thanks!

sample tracert

by ajdias In reply to post the trace

Tracing route to [
over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 * * * Request timed out.
2 8 ms 8 ms 9 ms
3 13 ms 12 ms 14 ms
4 * * reports: Destination net unreachable.
Trace complete.

That's a tracert to one of the non-working sites. Several of the others are exactly the same with the exception of course of the destination url.
