Internet Explorer 6

By topcat8 ·
I was hijacked and now that I have most of my problems solved, I still can't hit some sites that I always used to, I can go to another pc and can hit the sites, but not on mine. So I need to know if I can uninstall IE 6 and reinstall it. I tried to do a new install but when it found mine it would not proceed. I hope that someone can come up with an answer, or I guess the only other solution is to reinstall WinXP. HELP!!!
Dave

Your best option is to boot to the WinXP cd-rom and start over. Not because of the fact that IE 6 is so integrated into the OS, but because of the fact that uninstalling IE 6.0 very rarely works correctly. It is possible to uninstall 6.0 and then reboot and reinstall.... but I've seen it not solve any of the problems from viruses/"hijackings."

You have nothing to lose by trying, and you have learned a lot in rebuilding your system from what happened before, but you may end up falling back on a clean install. That's usually the best way to resolve all the problems anyway.

You can remove IE6 using the utility IERadicator, which can be downloaded from site
www.litepc.com/ieradicator
www.webattack.com/get/ieradicator
this is a freeware download

You could also use the Add/Remove Programs,to revert back to previous version, then reinstall IE 6,but this is time consuming

Another option to try is System Restore. Just pick a restore point prior to this issue and roll back to that date. To do this, go to Start | Programs | Accessories | System Restore. It's not a surefire fix like a clean install of XP -- including nuking the drive, but it has its advantages over starting from scratch. I usually save the clean install option as a last resort on my family PC/file server, but on my laptop and burning PC, I just nuke and go. :) Restore may or may not resolve your issue. I have found that this option only works a little more than half the time but a safe option anyway.

Good luck and hope this helps! :)

Open the Control Panel and then Add/Remove Programs.

Find IE in the installed programs list and click remove. This should open a dialog box that will allow you to repair the exesting instalation of IE.
