    Internet explorer lockup

    Locked

    by rick h ·

    Hello,
One of our machines ,win98, started not finishing loading internet explorer. We have road runner and also an aol acount. AOL loads just fine,I downloaded a new version of IE and when installing it even had to download files from the internet which it did with no problem. But Still when I start IE it loads, says it’s done, but the blue status bar doesn’t go away and it just sits there. Then I have to “ctrl-alt-del” to get out.
PS I also did a scanreg to set back the registry a couple of days and ran norton utilities to clean up the registry.

You never did say why you were installing IE Explorer to begin with. Why were you having to load it? Were you having probs with something else? Or is this a new machine and you are doing a clean install? What was your computer doing immediately befoe this install of explorer? Have you added anything new to your puter lately any new programs or any new piece of equipment? And what versions of AOL are you running along with what version of IE Explorer are you running? I have found that certain Explorer versions don’t work very well with certain AOL versions. But regardless, you are running 98 so you can go to start-run-and type in “sfc”. This is system file check, if the computer finds a damaged system file, it will require your 98 cd rom to extract the file and reinstall. Make sure you do a scandisk, make sure you get rid of prior versions of IE and AOL if you can find them, and clean out cache and temp/setup files first. If nothing else, I would call AOL and get a differentcd rom and try it, not the downloaded file but the actually cd rom. Hope that helps!

I guess I should have said starting up IE rather than saying loading. We use IE to get to the net, AOL is just for our office e-mail.

I have now discovered with being patient that it does finish loading up AND loading pages or other web sites but it takes almost a full minute.Again this is roadrunner (cable connection) and when using AOL rather than IE it is instantanious which tells me my connection and net card are ok.
      Any ideas?

      1) you are running 98 on one of your computers in your office. Im assuming here these computers are on a network 2) You are using cable to connect to the internet. 3) You have AOL as your ISP which you use for office email, but once you are connected you 4) cannot browse the web with the IE Explorer (version 5 then 6) because it is slow (1 min) to open? Is this correct so far? And when you scandisk, 5) it’s hanging/freezing about 1/2 way…is this correct? Is Outlook involved here at all?

If all the afore mentioned are correct, except for Outlook…then I would have to say that the downloaded version of IE Explorer was corrupt, which upon installation caused some additional problems. Completely uninstall the IE Explorer (if you had IE on your machine before, it will revert back to the original IE before any upgrades were done,) then I would use the cd for installation. You didn’t mention that you had any other problems with your computer other than the slow (and though one minute may seem slow it has a lot of variables depending on the time of day you are using it, ie how many people are on the cable at that moment etc) starting of IE Explorer, and now the scandisk freeze. I am assuming you have defraged because that is what opens the pages faster, among other things. Yet using the AOL browser, it is instantaneous? (He he..that’s the first time I have ever heard that about AOL) This would make me think the IE explorer is corrupted/damaged. As far as yourscandisk goes…I would start the computer and right before it shows windows on the screen hold down the control key and it should show you a DOS screen ..choose the save mode and then when it loads windows, it will load the diagnostic mode to help you troubleshoot the prob.,if it finds one. You may want to go to DOS and run scandisk from there.

Actually I believe this started when the user tried to install Outlook, unsuccessfully I might add. We also get an ole regisrtation error when trying to run outlook. I have uninstalled outlook and tried re-installing it but the registration error persists.
        Thanks,
        Rick
