IP Address tries to resolve as a DNS name

This is wierd, it is an XP machine then you try to ping a specific address on the internet the ping request fails with could not find host XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX You can ping other ip addresses on the internet and you can ping this one from other PC’s. It is as if the PC is treating the IP address as a DNS name. I have checked the PC hosts file, all ok. the pc did have a browser hijack that has been cleaned off and the ip address is used for the remote access VPN. I am wondering if the software has hijacked the VPN IP address. If you enter the ip address into IE it says “web page cannot be displayed” it should show the login page for the router.

Any ideas?
