Is it possible to find out who printed what?

By GJ2008 ·
Is it possible to find out who printed out what? Is there a log or another way of checking this on a Windows NT or 2000 server? Confedential documents were printed out and left at the printer and I need to find out who printed them. Please advise.

Yes you can.
Open the Event Viewer on the Windows machine that is the print server.

In the System log, look for Event ID 10. That is the Print event. Event ID 10 records all print job info. A record will look like this:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: Print
Event Category: None
Event I 10
Date: 9/1/2003
Time: 11:56:59 AM
User: JOE
Computer: SERVER1
Description:
Document 47, http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/teams/schedule?team=cws owned by JOE was printed on SHAREDPRINTER1 via port PORT1. Size in bytes: 440081; pages printed: 2
Data:

So as you can see, user JOE (me!) printed out 2 pages from ESPN today (the schedule for the Chicago White Sox; go Sox!!!!)

The date, time, username, print server name, document title, and # of pages will be listed. Personally, I do reporting for management on who prints a lot of stuff out on our printers.

hope this helps
