is LINUX enough like UNIX?

Our Xerox DocuTech 135, which is installed on our network as a “printer”, appears to be Unix-driven. We are running a WinNT4.0 server with Novell Netware 3.11 and have no problem in sending jobs to the “printer”. We wonder: if we could communicate more directly with the Xerox, could we save files that we scanned into it back on to the server? Is Linux close enough to UNIX that we might be able to do this?
