Keeps Restarting After Sound Card Switch

By RoBieJuan ·
I am working on a HP Pavilion 4450 PC. The combination modem/sound card went bad.(No Sound) I replaced it with a Motorola modem and a Guillemot Maxi Sound Muse card. The Muse was one of the only cards I could find that would power the HP unamplifiedspeakers. Everything seemed to be working great. Drivers were good and Windows (98 Second Ed). recognized both cards. Now the problem. When I shut down the PC it boots right back up again. It will not shut down! I removed the modem and had the same problem. When I removed the sound card (Which is in the same PCI slot as the old HP card) the PC shut down normaly. What is the deal with this thing? Any suggestions?

Keeps Restarting After Sound Card Switch

Yep, gotta love HP's. OK, have a couple of these HP beasts myself and here's what i had to do.

When you replace an HP system card with an OEM unit, before you even take the old cards out you need to totally remove ALL drivers from the system.[Start/settings/control panel/device manager..select device .. REMOVE], then power down the system. Physically remove the old cards then restart the system. This is to ensure it does not try to 'find' or load drivers. Once you do this, power down the case again and install the new cards, one-at-a-time. Install the drivers per Mfg. suggestions and make any adjustments you need to. But since you have already done this, try removing your new cards and doing the above, use a different PCI slot for the sound card if one is available. If not....try re-starting a couple of times or actually shutting down for 5 minutes or so to clear the buffers totally.

This should stop the HP from looking for original equipment. Remember though, your RESTORE diskswill not be able to install your new equipment so you need to keep the drivers and installation CD's/floppies handy in case you ever need to 'restore' your PC.
Hope this helps ... H

Keeps Restarting After Sound Card Switch

Did not work. This board has only 2 PCI slots. I tried to switch the cards and got the same results. Checked in Add/Remove and found the old modem and sound cards were there even though I had removed them from the device manager. Removed them from Add/Remove, but got the same results. Will not shut down with this sound card. HP sent me a reply to my problem, but I find it unsatisfactory. They suggest I leave the old card in and disable the sound portion of it in the device manager. I just LOVEHP PC's. Any more idea's?

I gave up on the Maxi Muse Card and installed a Aureal Vortex Card instead. Everything is working great now. PC shuts down with no problems. The new card will not put out the volume the Muse did, but it is good enough. Thanks for the help and I hopethis helps someone else who runs into one of HP's little problems:)
