Keyboard and Mouse Problems

By FrstdOne ·
I?m having two problems with my mouse I hope someone can help me with. The first problem is that when I click on the ?start? menu and select ?programs,? I can no longer right click to bring up the menu that starts with ?open? and ends with ?properties.? Most importantly to me, I can no longer ?sort by name.? I tried using my keyboard instead, thinking it was a problem with the mouse but that won?t work either. I can right click anywhere else on the computer and use the keyboard to bring up menus without a problem. I?ve tried uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them. I?ve tried removing the mouse physically and I?ve also uninstalled and reinstalled the Intellimouse software. Nothing seems to work.

The other problem I have iswith my wheel. Whenever I restart or cold boot the computer, I can only scroll one line at a time no matter how many times I change this to a different number in the control panel. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both the drivers and Intellimouse software and that doesn?t help.

I?m running a PIII Gateway Solo 9550 with Windows XP Professional and am using a Microsoft optical wheel mouse. I?ve made no changes to my system before these problems began occurring. Please help.

you can try a couple of things.
1) restore Xp to a date when everything worked properly.
2)try using tweakui to customize the interface
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp
3) try this http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;288186#Task1

I've already tried System Restore, that dosen't work, neither does TweakUI. The link in #3 doesn't work. Maybe I need a registry edit or something.

I found that both Innteli-mouse and inteli-keyboard from MS had problems runing in Windows ME. went to a generic keyboard-mouse. Was using an Asus MB. Drop that combo and went to a HP. There is an Kowledge base article but I forget the number. Do a search for article. You may find a solution.:)

I actually ran into that same problem a while back; I don't know how it happened, but the "Enable dragging & dropping" setting in the Advanced tab of the "Customize Start Menu" dialogue got unchecked. Right-click your Start menu, select Properties, click "Customize..." and find the "Enable dragging & dropping" checkbox - check it, click OK, APPLY, OK and see if it worked. If not, may the Force be with you.
