Laptop and Desktop Wireless

By kathyabbett ·
I have a Dell Laptop with a Sierra Wireless Aircard 860 and Cingular Wireless Unlimited Laptop Connect Plan. We travel a lot in our Recreational Vehicle. I love the anytime/anywhere that the laptop with the wireles card gives. I am thinking of getting a desktop for at home (the laptop is nice, but desktops are better when in one place), but don't know if I can get a desktop that will use the same wireless card. Is there such a thing or is there a piece of hardware that will use it and connect my desktop (not using the laptop as a server, I guess that is what it would be). If I have to get a separate wireless card, I would have to have a second subscription to Cingular, I guess. Don't want to got that route. Thanks for the help. I don't know much about this wireless stuff.

Yes it is possible. But for desktops they do not normally have PCMCIA slots so the solution is to buy a PCI (or PCI Express) wireless network card which you can fit in. Alternatively, you can get PCI cards with a a built in PCMCIA slot where you can fit a laptop type PCMCIA wireless network card.

PCI card

Thanks for your information. Can I pick your brain a little deeper? Are the PCI cards with a built in PCMCIA slot "one size fits all" in that I could buy one, install it and not have to tweak settings in order to use Cingular Sierra Wireless AirCard 860? I really appreciate your help.

To be honest I have never used such a card but I have seen them and I do not know if it will need tweaking or not.
