laptop hard disk adaptor for desktop

By dongnufable ·
I wonder if the adaptor will work on a 39 pin desktop board male ide connector. Most desktop board I encounter do not have a 40 pin ide male connector. I wanted a certain software application to work on my desktop just like what I have in my old laptop.

Missing Pin

by TheChas In reply to laptop hard disk adaptor ...

I assume that the IDE connectors that you are talking about are the "standard" desktop IDE connectors with 2 rows of 40 pin locations.

The missing pin is purposely left out to allow for the use of "keyed" connectors.

If both the motherboard and cable connectors are keyed, you cannot install the cable backward.

So yes, the laptop IDE adapters will work with any IDE controller that supports the drive size.

Just remember to fit it properly

Or you will destroy the IDE controller as you will be feeding it the 12 V & 5 V power instead of the drive. Otherwise there are no problems in using these but you do have to use the complete kit which also has a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter plate so that the LT drive is held steady and transfers the heat generated out as well.
